Croatia 2 Australia 2

Graham Poll - Mr Merk now has a contender for his crown!

What a howler he had. Does anyone know what happened at the end of the game? I thought he awarded a penalty, then everyone ran on the pitch and the game was over. Simunic should have already left the pitch after this two yellow cards, then he gets a third and then gets sent off. Madness. What would have happened if he had scored the winner for the Croats? And Poll missed two clear penalties for the Soceroos. Fourth official anyone?

Oh, and
Zeljko Kalac is one of the worst goalkeepers I have ever seen. What a shocker for the second goal. I can't believe Schwarzer was dropped in favour of this lanky clown with Croatian heritage. I'm sure he was put between the sticks just because he is about 7 foot tall. I have seen him play in a couple of World Cup warm-up games and he looked crap then.

I thought this was the most entertaining game of the tournament so far. Thanks Mr Poll. I hope we get to see more of you in the tournament but I think FIFA will be sending you straight home, to stand in a corner with a Dunce's hat on.

What a result though for the Socceroos. I thought they fully deserved the win, even if I am a bit bias :-). So now they play Italy in the last 16 and there's no reason why they can't beat them.

During the Aussie games a guy called Simon Hill does the commentary. He is pretty crap. He said this when Josh Kennedy came on with a few minutes to go whilst chasing the game;

"
Josh Kennedy, who's looks have been likened to that of Jesus, gets the chance to be Australia's saviour."

Oh please!

It'll be interesting to see how they do against Italy. Good luck to the Roos! I missed Graham Poll's performance as they showed the Brazil game here. As you say, it sounds like he'll be going straight back home. I agree with you about Murk, too. He seems to take far too much pleasure when he brandishes a card.

Hopefully the highlights you get to see will show his total imcompetence. It was shocking and a complete farce at the end. I had visions of the guy who should have already left the pitch scoring the winning goal.

Before the game the Aussie pundit was saying Poll was the best referee for this game. He was really praising him. Then afterwards he was slating him big time. Very amusing to see.

There's no pressure on the Roos now, not that they were expected to qualify anyway.

I think they can beat Italy. They played Brazil off the park at times and never gave up against the Japanese or Croats.

Sounds to me like you are forgetting your "true" national team...mind you, at least the roos play good football or is it soccer over there?

Unfortunately they call it soccer but at the moment they do seem to be playing it better that England.

I have to admit that I have been just as nervous watching the Socceroos. After all the better they do the higher the profile of the game over here which can only be a good thing for the likes of me.

Now they have got this far, anything else is a bonus.

Very apt picture of Graham Poll mate, unbelievably bad performance. I'm not sure who was worse between him and Kalac, who seemed to be trying to throw the game (perhaps it was a mistake to select a Croatian keeper after all)

Still, it all added to the entertainment factor, and this game was undoubtedly one of the best so far for that. It was better than a knockout stage as a draw was enough for Australia, so each goal that went in swung the tie. Or, as Guy Mowbray helpfully put it near the end: "It's not over yet...One Croatia goal now would swing this game about turn."

    Thanks Guy.

Anyway that's definitely one to remember for pub-quiz's - Simunic - the first play to receive three yellow cards in the World Cup! Why do I get the feeling Graham Poll will be refereeing down at Ashton Gate next season?

Yeah, it was a cracking game and hopefully a little taster of what all the knock-out games will be like.

Australia is going mental over this win. They have never ever done anything like this before in a football World Cup - I just hope they (the oker fans) don't think they are invincible. Unlike us Poms who will of course win the tournament.

Graham Poll at Ashton Gate? - he's been there already mate.

Well, it certainly won't be because City are going up, Andy...
