Good Onya Steve!
Not since 9/11 when the first plane hit the World Trade Centre have I seen news spread so quickly around the office.
Steve Irwin - Legend - was killed today by a stingray off the coast of Queensland on the Great Barrier Reef.
I've always been a huge fan of Steve's. He was a loud okka Ozzie who spent his life roaming the globe on the hunt for some poor innocent bystander in the animal kingdom to pester. Although his 'hands on' approach may have been a little too invasive for some (and that was what probably what killed him in the end) it was what made him great, and so watchable. He was always entertaining. Some people thought he was too much. I thought he was tops.
Many a hangover has been nursed over the years with the help of Steve on a lazy Sunday afternoon (usually when it's raining and you're waiting for the Eastenders omnibus before Sky's 4pm game).
My favourite memory of Steve Irwin is not of him wrestling a crocodile (although watching him jump out of a boat into a croc infested river, in the dark was always funny to watch).
Nor was it of him feeding a crocodile whilst holding his one month old baby boy, Bob.
It was when the show cut to a beautiful quiet panorama of the outback. Then, from behind the camera, and out of no-where this panicked emu is seen bolting into the horizon. It was being chased by Steve who was running as fast as he could. Somehow he finally catches up with the emu, he throws himself at it and wrestles it to the ground. Cut to close-up of a very hot, sweaty and dusty Steve on top of the frightened emu. "Loooooook!" he shouts to the camera. "It's an emuuuuu!", before letting it go. Priceless!
I haven't got a picture of the emu chase (and nor could I find it on You Tube), but I did find this one of Steve with a rather big spider.
And this one of Steve with his wife, Terri, and Harriet, a 176 year old tortoise (which also died recently!).
Thanks for the memories Steve. It's a sad day!

Unbelievable news. What a way for him to go - according to the BBC it's the first death by Stingray recorded since the 1940's! Oh the irony...

RIP Steve, the guy was complete legend. To think he was mucking around wih crocs, spiders and snakes, and then for this to happen. Arse.

he's a legend.
beneath all that bluster was a lot of knowledge about those animals and a deep concern for their conservation.
...and that footage of him leaping into the water after the croc in the dark was indeed priceless.

(Bob is also a brilliant name to give a baby)

That emu story is very very funny.

It was incredibly funny to watch as well.
Nice, calm outback setting. Suddenly there's Steve chasing after a bloody emu for no other reason than to tell us it was an emu. Brilliant.
Australia is in shock and from what I can gather, it has been the top news story around the world. It's obviously huge news here. There's been talk of a state funeral (which would've been a bit bonkers!) but the family have turned it down.
I've just watched one of those obituary programmes they throw together when something like this happens. It's very sad indeed.
