The Final: Italy 1 France 1 (5-3 on Penalties)

So that's that then. It's all over. Italy are the World Champions.

We were treated to a goal-fest from these two teams (well two goals in normal 90 minutes was probably two more than most people expected, including me), a spectacular moment of madness in the form of a head/chestbutt from Zidane (what a way to bow out of football) and of course a penalty shoot-out, which I do enjoy watching when England aren't in them. It may not be the right way to win a World Cup but let's face it, the powers at be aren't ever going to change it.

At least the Socceroos went out to the eventual Champions.

I've definitely enjoyed the World Cup although I can't help feeling on having missed out on it being so far away from England and the people I normally watch the football with. It's been pretty tough going all nocturnal, even without having a job to go to, and I'm very much looking forward to getting a decent nights sleep.

I think Germany and Argentina played the most entertaining football, and it is always good to watch the African teams play. The African teams had the most memorable goal celebrations, that's for sure. I also think that this was the tournament where diving came to the fore. This is probably because of all the hype surrounding Ronaldo. If I wasn't English then I probably wouldn't be so bothered. It was a shame seeing Terry Henry lower himself to that level though.

So, England for World Champions in 2010 then?

To be honest, I don't think the diving, (or 'simulation' as they're now calling it) was any worse in this tournament than in the previous couple of World Cups. Remember Rivaldo holding his head when the ball was kicked at his knee four years ago? Or Owen winning a penalty against Argentina eight years ago?

Hopefully England can take heed from watching Italy's unstoppable penalties, as like England, Italy had a shocking record in penalty shoot-outs before last night. I long for the day when English players step up with the kind of confidence that the Italians displayed, rather than looking like they don't want to be there.

I loved watching the Italians beat the ghosts of history too. Gives us all hope, doesn't it?

I agree with Andy about the simulation. It's no worse this year, but people just keep going on about it. Not me, though, of course.

Hang on, Owen's penalty dive against Argentina was also four years ago, wasn't it? Eight years ago was his wonder-goal. Never mind...

Oh and speaking of Motto and Lawro, it couldn't have been timed better when Motto asked "It is still sweltering in this press-box isn't it?" just as the German director had put up a shot of a half-naked Italian woman. Lawro piped up: "Getting hotter..."

Haha...it's nice to get some Lawro/Motto puns. After a frenzy of pun blogging at the start of the tournament it all went a bit quite.

Don't worry about the years Andy, they all seem to blend into one. I have real trouble trying to think who scored what and when - even remembering our penalty misses over the years can be difficult because there was just too many of them.

Didn't Owen dive for a penalty against Argentina in both those World Cups?
